Information We Collect

We collect your email address, name, selected learning goal, French level, lesson progress, practice activity, and subscription status. We do not collect or store card numbers; payments are processed securely by Stripe.

How We Use Your Information

We use your information to provide personalized French lessons, track your progress, and send you important account updates. We never sell your data to third parties.

AI Conversations

Your conversations with Sophie and support chat messages may be processed by AI providers so the app can generate replies, corrections, and explanations. Some lesson answers and chat history may be saved locally on your device or in your account so you can continue later.

Voice Recordings

When you use Sophie Voice or a speaking task, your microphone recording is sent to OpenAI (Whisper) to turn it into text. The text is sent to Anthropic or OpenAI to write Sophie's reply and feedback, and Sophie's spoken reply is generated by ElevenLabs or OpenAI. Outside full mock exams, we do not keep your audio after it is transcribed; transcripts and short session summaries may be saved with your account so you can review your practice. These providers process the data on our behalf and may store it in the United States.

Mock Exam Review by a Teacher

When you finish a full mock exam, we save a copy of it with your account so it can be reviewed: your reading and listening answers, your writing texts, the full speaking exchange with Sophie (her questions and your answers, as text), the AI estimates and feedback, and your first name. Before the speaking section we ask whether your voice may be recorded. If you agree, we keep the recording of each answer you speak, in private storage (Supabase, United States). If you say no, we keep the transcript only. Who can see this copy: you; the teachers of a school or institution you joined with its code (see "Schools and institutions" below), who can listen, read and leave comments; and anyone you send a share link to. If you are not in an institution, no teacher can see it. A share link is private and read-only, shows your first name only, expires after 30 days, and you can revoke it at any time; the person with the link can leave comments. Teacher comments are feedback to help you practise, not an official score. Audio is only played through links that expire after 10 minutes. We keep the copy and the recording for 12 months, then delete them automatically. Deleting your account deletes them at once. You can also ask us to delete them sooner at support@frenchly.app.

Schools and Institutions

If your school, language centre or another partner gives you an institution code, you can choose to join it (during setup or in your Profile). Before you join, we ask you to agree that the institution's teachers can see your full mock exams (answers, writing, speaking transcripts, AI estimates and feedback), your voice recordings if you chose to record them, and your progress (first name, mock exams taken, lessons completed, last activity). They can leave you comments. They cannot see your email, your payments, your conversations with Sophie or anything outside your mock exams and progress, and teachers of other institutions see nothing of yours. The institution may give you access to its exam(s) until its end date. You can leave the institution at any time in your Profile: its teachers stop seeing your work at once and its access ends. Teacher accounts are created by Frenchly for partner institutions.

Service Providers

We use these providers to run Frenchly: Supabase (accounts and data), Vercel (hosting), Stripe (payments), Anthropic and OpenAI (AI replies, scoring and transcription), ElevenLabs (text-to-speech), Resend (email), Sentry (Functional Software Inc., United States: error reports when something breaks, which can include your browser, the page address and technical details of the error; we set it not to collect your name, email or what you type), and Google Analytics, Meta and PostHog (measurement). Some of them store data outside Canada, including in the United States.

Data Storage

Account and progress data is stored with Supabase in a data centre in the United States. We use standard HTTPS transport and platform security controls to protect account data.

Canadian Privacy Law (PIPEDA and Quebec Law 25)

Frenchly is run from Canada and follows the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, for learners in Quebec, the Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector as amended by Law 25. The person responsible for the protection of personal information at Frenchly is Ujjwal Chaudhary, the founder (see Person in Charge of Personal Information below). Write to support@frenchly.app with any question, request or complaint about your personal information. You can also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or, in Quebec, the Commission d'accès à l'information.

Processing Outside Canada and Quebec

Some of the providers listed above store or process your information outside Canada and Quebec, mainly in the United States, where it is subject to local law. We send them only what they need to do their job and they process it on our behalf under their data protection terms. By creating an account and using these features you consent to this cross-border processing. If you do not want your information processed outside Canada, do not create an account; you can withdraw consent at any time by deleting your account.

Security Incidents

If a confidentiality incident involving your personal information creates a risk of serious harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (and the Commission d'accès à l'information for Quebec residents) as soon as possible, record the incident, and take steps to reduce the harm.

Visitors from the EU and UK (GDPR)

If you use Frenchly from the European Union or the United Kingdom, Frenchly is the controller of your personal data. We process it to provide the service you signed up for (performance of a contract), to keep it secure and prevent abuse such as repeated free trials (legitimate interests), to meet legal and tax obligations, and, for analytics and advertising cookies, only with your consent. You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of your data, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. Write to support@frenchly.app; you may also complain to your local data protection authority. Transfers outside the EU/UK rely on our providers' standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards.

Analytics & Advertising

We use Google Analytics and the Meta (Facebook) Pixel together with Meta's Conversions API to measure page views, signups, and subscription conversions — including those originating from ads — so we can understand what works and improve Frenchly. We use PostHog to see how the app is used (which pages and features people use, linked to your account ID and email once you log in); if you accept analytics cookies, PostHog also records session replays of how you use the app, with everything you type masked. To match a purchase to an ad interaction, conversion events may share a one-way hashed (irreversible) version of your email with Meta. We never sell your personal data.

Your Rights

You can delete your account from Profile, or request deletion, access to, or correction of your data at any time by contacting support@frenchly.app. We will process reasonable requests within 30 days unless retention is required for billing, security, or legal reasons. You can also ask for a copy of your data in a commonly used format. To enforce one free trial per person, we keep a one-way hash (irreversible) of your email after you delete your account, never the email itself. You can also withdraw consent to analytics and advertising cookies at any time (see Cookies).

Cookies

We use essential cookies and storage to keep you logged in and save your progress. Analytics and advertising cookies and identifiers (for example Google Analytics, PostHog and the Meta Pixel's _fbp / _fbc) are used only if you accept them in the cookie banner; until then they stay off. You can change your choice at any time with the "Cookie settings" link, or block them with your browser settings, without affecting core functionality.
